SanDisk Sansa Clip+ 4 GB MP3 Player (Black) Reviews

Review by musicfan: 5 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
21e0eWeoLTL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerIf all you are looking for is a great sounding, small, cheap mp3 player with a display and expandability options, then the clip + is your best choice. This is very similar to the old clip with the following major differences:

- two minor button placement changes (improvement)

- UI is a bit smoother (menus scroll now)

- volume normalizing/gain

- micro-SD slot for up to 16 added gigs (which is huge)

- a little thicker, probably due to SD support

- clip is no longer removable (depending on your preference, this is a good or bad thing-guess you could just rip it off and file it down if you wanted to)

As always, it sounds great and blows away the iPod Shuffle in terms of value. So light and small--great for the gym. If you need your mp3 player to play games, surf the internet or serve double purpose as a grocery list, then this isn't for you, but if you're on a budget or just need something that plays music and does so well, this is the one.

Review by D. Ireland: 5 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
21e0eWeoLTL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerI got one of these as a backup player to use for running. Its great - small, lightweight and you can clip it onto a pocket, shirt sleeve or collar and it will hold firmly without falling off. Only had it a week week and its already taken the place of the Cowon D2 I bought a couple of years ago.

If you're looking for a small form factor, well made and cheap flash player without any frills, you'll find it in the Clip+.

These days, the only real benefit to buying a bigger player is so that you can play video on the fly and indeed the design of a lot of new MP3 players seems to be moving in the direction of Portable Media and Games. But if you're after an old-school, no frills MP3 player that sounds great - this is the one for you.

This is easy to use, the interface is simple (crucial if you're using it for running) and it requires no proprietary software (like iTunes) - just a simple drag and drop, and you have an Micro SD card slot to expand the memory (another or will get you a 16 gb micro-sd). All in all a lot better value for money than the screenless iPod touch.

There's really no reason not to buy one of these.

The only downer is the battery life - at 15 hours its decent, but the battery is non-removable (though the cost of the player is so little that by the time it wears out you'll have got your worth), and I'm not sure how the use of the SD card slot will impact that. On my D2 with its rated 52 hours of battery life - playing music or video from the memory card slot seems to reduce the battery life by up to 50%. Something to bear in mind.

SanDisk Sansa Clip+ 4 GB MP3 Player (Blue) Reviews

Review by Pramod Agrawal: 5 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
217xvCDwwFL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerSo recently, because I love my Sansa Clip so much for exercising, and I thought I could use one more, I picked one of these up at Bestbuy. I have used it for about a week so I can't say anything about the longetivity of the new Clip Plus, but I can tell you about everything else. First I will give you the cons since there is only one and that is also only about preference. I personally LOVED the sleek look of the original sansa clip, but that has been replaced with a sort of glittery finish on the front. That is about it and to add to this, everything else from the outside such as the plastic used has been revamped to feel better in your hands and is just overall better quality. Now on to the most important part, the features. The main thing that sets this apart from the original clip is the addition of a microSD card slot. This can take up to a 32gb microSD card, so if you were to pair one with this, you could potentially get a 36(!)gb memory for this puny little item. That is the next thing I will get into, the size. If you haven't ever heard about the original sansa clip, basically, Sandisk designed this line of Sansa for portability and mainly for exercise. It feels really good in the hand and the non removable clip on the back can clip on to virtually anything. Next is the display. The menu remains much of the same, but Sansa also added slotRadio compatibility and a nicer flow to menu if you're into that. Finally we'll go to the placement of the buttons. On the old sansa clip, there was a button the side for power and hold, but a lot of clip owners including me found that uncomfortable. To cope with this, Sandisk put the power button on the top and put the hold funtion to holding the home button for about 3 seconds. So overall, this is a fantastic MP3 player in any category, but if you are in the market for one for the gym, pass up the Ipod Shuffle for 79$ with no screen and counter-intuitiveness(in my opinion) and get this really nice compact MP3 player for only 50$ for the 4gb, 40$ for the 2gb and 70$ for the 8gb. Thank you and I hope this review helps.

217xvCDwwFL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 Player9/14/2009:

This is my first MP3 player. I'm 50 yrs. old. I paid $[...]for it. Please note that at the time I typed this review Amazon only had one style available: 4GB, in blue color. And this is because it has only been available on Amazon for about 1 month. In fact the model itself has only been available by Sandisk since early August 2009.

Sound Review: If u read some reviews online you will find that they rate the sound quality of this little guy comparable to units costing much more and are much larger. Here's an example: [...]. And I agree. Even with the volume turned all the way up, there is no background noise (as in hiss) between tracks.

And uploading music files is very easy. Just follow instructions. You can even upload tracks to the mini sd card before inserting it into the player. Nice feature.

The only thing I don't like is they (Sandisk) doesn't allow the clip to be removed like the older models. That means when, not if, but when the clip breaks (because it is made of plastic) you will have to send the whole unit to be repaired.

One more thing, make sure you connect the player to your computer and get the latest firmware update that is available. I didn't do that & found that the equalizer wouldn't work at first. But once I downloaded latest firmware and reset it, it worked fine.

ENJOY!!

SanDisk Sansa Clip+ 4 GB MP3 Player (Red) Reviews

Review by Ross A. Seymour: 5 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
21xayEmnjNL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerThe title says is all: Clip +. It is really the first generation of the Clip plus a few well thought out design and firmware changes.

The volume control is now on the opposite side, the side with the usb plug rather than the headphone. With right-angle headphone plugs, you needed to swing the headphone plug out of the way to use the volume control on the old Clip.

The on/off switch is now on the top instead of the left side (where the volume control now is). I often needed to turn off my Clip while under a shirt and not looking at it. I actually turned it off only about half the time because of slide switch. Now there's simply a button on the top. The hold button, which used to be on the on/off switch, is now activated by holding down the menu button. Since I rarely used the hold button I can't say whether this is an improvement.

The clip on the back is a big design change. The clip, for better or worse, is no longer detachable. Personally, I liked being able to detach it if I was using velcro rather the clip to attach to something, like a bag. That being said the new clip is sleeker. Closer to the back of the body and a bit wider. The clip now has a ridge at the end of the clip as opposed to the circle of the old Clip. It seems to hold on just as well.

The square controls (as opposed to the former round controls) doesn't make much of a difference. If you are using the controls by feeling rather than seeing, the square may make it a bit easier to know where you are at on the controls.

Otherwise it is the same size and all. My old Clip silicone case fits it OK, but I will get a new case when they come out.

Inside there are some firmware changes. Included now is a menu item for Slot Player chips (a soon-to-be obsolete format if I've ever seen one). The menus slide rather than jump, giving it a smoother look (I guess). In the old Clip, when you pressed the center button while a track was playing, it went to a visualization, then a listing of the current track playing. Obviously a redundancy. Now, it show info on the next track to play, instead of the current one. Other changes had already been incorporated in firmware updates for the original Clip.

One new function is the replay gain function. Very useful if you shuffle songs. This allows music to play back at about the same volume without you, the listener, having to actually change the volume. It works by adding a bit of instruction to each music file with information about how loud or soft the track is and then the volume of the player adjusts accordingly. Whether your tracks have replay gain information on them depends on how you got them. Many media players, like Media Monkey, can read the tracks and add this information.

One further note on the replay gain function. It should be set to song if you are on shuffle. Also the pregain is set a bit low. If you find yourself fiddling with the volume, increase the replay gain setting to 6 or 9.

The manual says it has gapless play. I believe you need to rip your tracks as gapless for this to work. Many standard mp3 converters don't do this, but maybe it is more prevalent for AAC (iTunes).

The best for last: a micro card slot. This allows you to add capacity to the player (currently the limit is 16gb with larger cards on the horizon), well above the 4gb that it comes with. If you have gone lossless (I use FLAC) then you know that extra file space is a big plus. With only FLAC files, the 4gb player holds about nine hours of music (probably five times more with normal MP3 files). This is fine by me but if I'm going on a trip then having the expansion capacity will be a big plus.

Sound quality wise, it sounds about the same to me, compared with the old Clip. Which means it sounds great, amped or not. Some have noted a fuller, warmer, louder sound, but my old ears can't pick that out.

Why people don't use these by the droves at the gym is beyond me. I still see very few of these players down at the Y, while I see all manner of big iPods. This little machine is perfect for the gym or any on-the-go activity.

Review by Larry Melman: 2 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
21xayEmnjNL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerThe Clip+ is the ideal size for runners or gym rats. Mine replaces a Creative Zen Stone Plus w/Speaker (now obsolete), and if you are familiar with this player, the Clip+ is exactly the same size and thickness. It fits easily into a pants or gym shorts pocket. I will probably cut the clip off, which will make it even thinner.

However, I think by now, everyone has owned an mp3 player, and there is a set of basic features that we all expect to have. We expect buttons to work in a standard way. The Clip+ is confusing and/or a failure on many counts. I am still trying to understand the Clip+, but almost without exception I am finding that everything I was used to doing is more difficult or simply impossible. I can't believe this is a "version 2" product.

1. The Clip+ has a date/time setting, but the only place to see it is on the menu where you set it. What was the point?

2. The buttons on the front of the Clip+ depress way too easily. If you bump your pocket just so, you'll pause the player or change tracks. This never, ever happened on my old player - the buttons had enough resistance to prevent this. To avoid this on the Clip+, you use the Lock function which locks out all the buttons. That's better than nothing, but not much. The volume and on/off buttons are on the sides of the case and have more resistance to accidental bumping.

3. The Clip+ assumes that you use MP3 tags to organize your files/albums, so their menu system is based on that. The suppliers of the podcasts I listen to, don't seem to care about tags. And that's fine. I simply rename my files to be in the alphabetical order that I want to listen to them. The Clip+ supports this, but it is not the default mode. You have to wander through the menus to find "Folders" mode. And even so, the menu system seems to jump back into "tagged podcast" mode all the time.

4. The Clip+ lacks a "play one track and stop" mode, which was very handy on my old player when playing podcasts. The player would stop, I'd delete the track and start the next one. This mode doesn't exist on the Clip+. I used to take my old player to bed at night and "play one and stop" was useful there as well. The Clip+ has a sleep mode which is a fair alternative, but it takes about 10 button clicks to get to it.

5. There seems to be a bug where if you delete a file while it's playing, near the end of the file... the Clip+ deletes the NEXT file. You are asked to confirm that you're deleting a file... but you're not told which file is on the chopping block. Nice going there.

6. The display is 3 lines. Most of their menus are 4 lines long. Again, poor design.

7. The Clip+ has a bookmark feature for podcast and audiobook files. If you have played part of a track, a record is kept of your last position in the track. If you leave the track and return later, you return to the bookmarked spot. Sounds like a good idea... but it's buggy. Suppose you're in a track and want to start over. You can't. The "back" button takes you to the start of the _previous_ track. (Hopefully that's a bug they can fix.) From there, the "ahead" button will return you to your (bookmarked) position where you were before. All you can do is manually scan back to the beginning. Sometimes you are given a choice to "Resume" or "Restart" a track... but never when I really want it. If I have to think this much about a "feature" and still can't figure it out, it's the mark of poor design. Stuff like this should just work without having to think about it.

8. In general, the Clip+ requires far too much use of the menu system. On my old player, I could do everything I needed to do with 2 or 3 button presses at the most. I could do a lot of stuff on the treadmill without breaking stride, and without even looking. Not so with the Clip. You really have to be looking at the menus to do anything.

9. The card slot really ought to have a rubber cap or plug. It's just wide open to dirt, lint, moisture, etc. You can see the circuit board through the slot. That can't be a good thing.

Well, I hope this helps anyone considering the Clip+.

Coby 4 GB MP3 Player with FM Radio (Red) Reviews

Review by G. Murray: 4 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
41Nolgb rsL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerThis player was exactly what I was looking for - something relatively inexpensive on which I could upload audio books for on-the-go listening. I do not have a lot of sit time but enjoy books. This fit the bill. The greatest pro to me is the fact that each track not only has a timer that counts up the time, but this player counts down as well simultaneously. That way if I want to re-listen to a track, I know how far I've got to go back. Most players just have a counter that counts up the time without letting you know how much time is left on a given track. The biggest con - I bought a candy apple red player. Although it is nice and pretty, the quality of the finish is poor. It scratches easily. Even just a bit of pressure from winding the cord around the player has nicked the finish. Considering the pro, however, it's something I can live with.

41 KASj6GYL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerI found this mp3 player on sale for at a local store and thought what a great deal. I only had it for a week and the screen went blank so you couldn't see any of the buttns. The battery didn't last as long as I had wished and there was no way of organizing the songs on the player. It put them in folders by artist and in the order you uploaded them. So they were hard to find since they weren't in alphabetical order. I played it on random mode but it always seemed to play the first few folders all the time
Review by Elizabeth B.: 2 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
41 KASj6GYL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerThe on/off button on my unit broke off after about 3 months of normal usage so I don't think it was made all that well. Further, the mp3 decoder isn't so great, either, as the unit had a tendency to cut off the first bit of each song. The controls are difficult to see in daylight so this can make choosing songs or even forwarding through songs difficult. The rechargeable battery didn't hold much of a charge - maybe four hours worth of listening.

On the other hand, the video quality of the videos is surprisingly nice.

Overall, however, I'd have to NOT recommend this product. I'm currently using Coby MP300-1G MP3 Player with 1 GB Flash Memory, USB Drive and LCD - Black which I purchased for an extremely low price at Walgreens and it beats the pants off this Sylvania unit.

516AvUS467L. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerThe unit shut itself off automatically while I was at the beach. The unit was in a beach bag. Thought it failed but after I got home it worked. Battery was fully charged so I knew it wasn't that. Few days later, left the unit in the console of my car. When I came out after work and tried to turn it on. It wouldn't. After I got home, it worked. The only common factor, temperature but in neither case was the unit in the sun. The unit was warm to the touch but not hot. On another occasion the same thing happened when I left it in the car. On a whim, I turned on the air conditioning and held the unit near the vent for less than a minute. It worked again! Obviously, there is a very temperature sensitive component.

Returned the first unit for another one thinking there was a manufacturing defect. The second unit does the same thing. Doesn't always work at the beach; doesn't always work in the car. What good is it? Previously had a Zen V Plus. Never had a problem at the beach or in the car.

I really like the unit, its controls and features but they're of no advantage if the unit doesn't function. There must be a design or component problem. It's return time again, and buy the refurb Zen V Plus 4GB available here.

The sofware sets up a logical order so I can find stuff like set up the equlizer, turn on speaker ,etc I will say that it did take me while to learn how to navigate the menu options. The speaker is an added bonus. I rarely listen to music mostly audio books. The sound can be addjusted so I can hear the spoken word clearly. I have poor hearing as a result of listening to music to loud when I was younger. Just a word to the younger folks out there. One final thought all of the players Zen nano plus,ZenV plusand the mosiac 300 do freeze up. I just reset the player it always rebulds and goes to where it left off this is annoying nothing more. Sandisk Sansa Clip 4 GB MP3 Player (Black) Reviews

Review by KarmaHD: 5 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
41AykCF5cNL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerI am usually very careful and consider all options before buying anything, when it came to the Sansa Clip 4 GB it was love at first site, I was hooked once I saw the diminutive little booger, impulse buy on the spot. I had been looking for an small FM radio to wear at the gym an almost impossible feat these days and most of the "mini" MP3 players either don't offer the options I deemed necessary, IE; the ability to choose what I want to listen to, or are too large and get in the way, the teeeenie Clip seemed to offer the best of both worlds, and for large I figured it was a small gamble.

I really did not have very high expectations, considering I have four mini FM radios with more different ways to attach to one's body it would make a bondage expert blush. I was also very weary about the built in FM player, since most small FM receivers I had tried were not worth spit. So to my amazement when I downloaded 3.5 GB of songs from my Windows Media player,(which was brainless by the way) and had a listen, I nearly fell out of my chair, this thing sounds unbelievable!!! And to top it off the FM player actually worked and worked well!

I figured maybe it was due to the fact that I was listening through a set of full ear Sennheiser studio quality headphones, so I started to niggle around and listen through my litany of other headphones and earbuds I have gathered over the past couple of years. Results, the sound was good with some, poor with the buds that came with the player, and UN-FRICKEN REAL with a pair of Skullcandy INK'D .00, (.99 Amazon) buds I purchased the same day as a back up to my Shure EC3'S I use with my First Gen IPod.

I found it hard to believe the clarity and detail of the Clip when paired with the Skullcandy INK'D buds, this combination exceeded all the other headphones and buds in my collection, which includes (stupid money) Grados. I asked myself why would a .00 set of cheap buds sound better than a 0 dollar pair of some of the finest headphones ever made?? Answer, sensitivity, plug the Grado or Sennheiser's into a DAC headphone amp (CityPulse overclocked) played through a OPPO DV980H upscaled to 192k, and yes the difference is more than obvious, so is the 00 ticket price to the show. What is truly mind boggling for 40 dollars less you can get in the game with the Sansa Clip/Skullcandy INK'D combo, which sounds better than most home systems costing 0's more. Yes that's right folks for -70 bucks you can get some amazing detail, clarity and bass response in the perfect "bang for the buck micro system". Top that off it comes in a package that is transparent, has all the features of the "Big Boy Players" and an FM player that is more than acceptable!

This one is a no brainer, open your wallet just a crack, part with what you would spend on a cheap date and pick up this combo, you will be happy you did, and best of all you can take the player home after dinner.

PS: to the guy who stated this is a 3.4 GB player and gave it 3 stars, you don't need to download the software that comes with the player which takes up most of the missing space, I have 3.8 GB of music on mine! The player works like a SD card it does not need software to work...

41AykCF5cNL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 Player

The SanDisk 4GB Sansa Clip MP3 Player is still one of my favorite MP3 designs. More color and size options are now available, and I continue to buy them to give as gifts and to upgrade capacity for myself. Some I use for music and some primarily for the voice recording feature. In addition to the silver SanDisk Sansa Clip 4 GB MP3 Player, they now offer this black version. While the product picture makes this black version look the same as the 1 GB black players, it is actually shinier akin to the silver version.

The Sansa Clip hasn't come down in price as much as I would like, but it's still a great value at any capacity. The 4GB model has four times the capacity as the iPod Shuffle for about 50% less. It also has a screen, FM Tuner, voice recording and more. You can also get the Sansa Clip 1 GB or SanDisk Sansa Clip 2 GB which are still sold. But with sizes for MP3 players growing, buying the largest size you can is probably the best option.

Pros -

+ Good combination of features, design and value

+ Decent sound quality for a small MP3 player

+ Nice capacity for a decent price

+ Very light-weight

+ FM tuner with 40 presets!!!

+ Voice recording

+ Nice design and color options

+ Nice format compatibility (MP3, DRM WMA, WMA, Audible)

+ USB 1.1 and 2.0 connectivity

+ Can be used as a USB drive / mass storage

+ Can sync music with drag & drop or via software

+ 15 hours battery life is better than Creative Zen Stone Plus or iPod Shuffle

Cons

- Larger body than the 2nd and 3rd generation iPod shuffles

- Some durability questions linger, though these black units have definitely been updated

- Some reports of defective units, so check yours within the return period

- More low cost options and competing feature rich players make it less of a slam dunk

The new Sandisk Sansa Clip may not be as durable as the iPod shuffle, but it still has the advantages of the iPod shuffle with some of the features and benefits of other MP3 player brands. Unlike the Sansa Express, which you can plug in directly into your USB port, the clip uses a standard USB B cable.

The Clip is definitely a little bigger than the iPod shuffle, but not by much. It has a great feel and a nicer clip. It is also priced right. It fills the market for a starter MP3, workout unit, or gift.

The rechargable battery seems better than the Creative Zen Stone Plus and gives you a respectable 15 hours. The sound is nice. The earbuds are passable for beginners but most people will replace them. As for durability, only time will tell; so far my units are holding up nicely.

I definitely recommend the larger sizes, whether 2GB or 4GB. For those needing more space, you will have to explore the CreativeZen, Sandisk Sansa, Sansa View or new iPod Nano. All of those units have higher price tags.

Overall, this is still a great starter unit for yourself or to give as a gift. Hopefully the new batches have improved durability. The same great features are all here that will keep this design around for a while.

Enjoy.

Creative Zen Mozaic 4 GB MP3 Player (Black) Reviews

Review by D. S. Oman: 4 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
418z7192syL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerI've had the Zen Mozaic 4 GB for about a week now, and I love it! Here is just a short list of the pros and cons I have noticed.

Pros:

Price - It's very cost-effective for the tons of features included!

FM Radio - The radio signal strength is unimpressive, but a plus nonetheless, since many don't offer this feature. Note: the radio antenna is built into the headphones, so with just the built-in speaker, there is no radio reception at all. Headphones must be plugged in.

Alarm clock - I love being able to set the song that I wake up to, and with the built-in speaker it works much like a cell-phone alarm clock.

Built-in speaker - Now you can share a song with a friend without sharing your headphones. The speaker sounds better than I thought it would considering how small the device is. I wouldn't listen to it for hours, but it's a nice additional feature.

Battery Life - When they say 30+ hours, they're not joking. Very impressive battery life.

Cons:

Plastic - The whole thing is made of plastic and feels somewhat toylike. Although I hesitate to call this a "con" because it feels very sturdy and well-made. If you want a metallic feel, you'll have to fork out the extra money for a Zune or iPod (twice the price).

Headphones - The headphones are pretty cheap. The music sounds tinny when you use them, but if you use nicer headphones, sound quality is good! Once again, the radio antenna is in the headphones if you want to use this feature.

My overall impression is that I am very satisfied with the product. I don't use it much for videos, but the included software will convert videos to .avi format for viewing, which is nice but the screen is a bit small for using it as a video player very often. I use Media Monkey for syncing, but you can use Windows Media Player or simply Drag and Drop.

Audio quality is great with better headphones and the interface is simple to use. The design, I think, is very sleek and unique, but obviously not for everyone. If you're looking for a nice little player to give as a gift or just to stash in your pocket, this is a great choice!

Review by Cheap Skate: 5 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
418z7192syL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerI use this mostly for audio books which I download from my local library and it works great with the OverDrive Media console in use by many public libraries. I love the fact that when it times out, it remembers where it left off even if it is left in "pause". The Zen V Plus would always return to the beginning of the segment if it was paused, which was a real pain when listening to a 16 hour book. In addition to 6 audio books, I also have 8 hours of Christmas music organized into a playlist. The battery lasts way longer than the V Plus and I can still use the charger that I bought for the Zen V Plus. Took a while to figure out some of the differences between programming the Mozaic and the Zen V Plus including the new typewriting but now I've become familiar with it I have no difficulty getting it programmed the way I need it. Easy to bookmark and restore. 2 thumbs up!

SanDisk Sansa e260 4 GB MP3 Player with MicroSD Expansion Slot (Black Reviews

Review by gadget lover: 5 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
41MM4N48wEL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerThis player is really well thought out. I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about an Ipod nano. The included software is complete and works flawlessly. Best of all, it will play WMA music files, has an included FM radio, has an expansion slot, and plays home videos. Here's what I've learned so far:

1. MUSIC- You can drag and drop from windows explorer or you can use Windows Media Player 10. Your choice. Either way works great. Note: The installation CD does not include WMP 10 but no big deal.

2. PHOTOS- The included media app on the install CD is a wonder to behold. It couldn't be easier to use and is rock solid stable. Photos shot horizontally are cropped (like widescreen) but photos that are vertical are shown full screen. I am going to experiment on this but haven't had time just yet since I just bought the Sansa.

3. VIDEO- Probably the best feature. The same media app that you use for photos also doubles for videos. Again, unlike some other players that have problems with converting video, this is heaven sent. Just pick out a video and press convert. It converts and then transfers in one step. It works perfectly.

Unlike past Sansa's you have to spend extra for a decent carrying case. Still, if you like felt pouches and lanyards (I Don't), they come included. One minor drawback is that you can only charge using the USB attached to the computer. An AC adapter would have been nice.

One final note. I tried to convert 2 DVD movies that were already on my hard drive. They were in the 550-700mb range. Each time, the video utility started to convert them no problem. However, in each case the utility timed out after 13 minutes 39 seconds. It cancelled the whole thing so not to worry about having 1/2 a movie on your sansa. I am going to fool around with this and see if I can shrink the file size of those 2 movies to around 200-300mb and try again. If I can work around this and am sucessful I'll let you know. Even though trying to watch a feature length movie on a 1.8 inch screen might be a bit much, the screen itself is really crystal clear (better than nano) and TFT not STN. I would highly recommend this player to anyone. Finally, a company that got everything right and it all comes right out of the box.

Review by Joe Smith: 4 Buy 4GB MP3 Player
41MM4N48wEL. SL75 Buy 4GB MP3 PlayerThe other reviews have already commented on the features and performance, so I'll try to comment on those aspects that haven't gotten much attention.

This is a great player, but I will concentrate on some annoying aspects:

1. When you charge via USB, the display on the device is always on. It doesn't fall asleep or go dim. The device is also nonresponsive in this mode, ie the buttons won't work and you won't be able to play or do anything.

2. If you have a USB wall charger, the display will dim and the buttons will work while charging. But the device must be on, it won't charge via AC if the device is turned off.

3. Playlists can be made on the fly, but you have to play each song you want to add to the playlist in order to bring up the option.

4. Video conversion software only installs on windows XP. It also breaks up larger files into smaller ones, and it's not very intuitive to copy whole DVD's. The quicktime format it uses is proprietary. Also, video files are only recognized in the root folder, so the device won't see files located in subfolders. Videos run at 15 fps.

5. Has the option of choosing MSC or MTP mode. MSC loads the player like a flash drive so you manually drag and drop files. MTP works with wmp 10, and some other third party software to manage your syncing. I prefer MSC, but I switched to MTP because when you unplug the USB cable in MSC mode, the device reboots itself. It does not do this is MSC mode.

This is a great player, but you'll need to spend some time configuring everything to your preferences. The Sandisk firmware has good basic functionality, but if you're used to lots of features for customization, be prepared to work for it with this device. I miss features like "play most recently synchronized" that my old player had. The good news is that these firmware drawbacks may soon be addressed when Rockbox firmware is released. The hardware and build quality of this device is truly excellent, and it will be the best flash player on the market once Rockbox firmware is released for the e200 series.
